Pacific Crest Trail Thru Hike Gear List – 2018 Edition
For my 2018 Pacific Crest Trail thru hike gear list I’m trying to stay pretty lightweight but not ultra-lightweight. I’m shooting for a base weight of 14-15lbs. A lot of this gear I already owned from a couple of mountaineering expeditions and our RTW trip, but some of it I bought specifically to bring the weight down a bit for the thru hike.
Please note: this gear list is a living document and still a work in progress! Most of the gear is solidified but some of the item weights are missing as I’m not home to weigh them! I expect the gear list will be fully filled out by December 2017 when we visit home for the holidays and then take the gear for a test run in Patagonia in Jan-Feb 2018.
The Big 3 (4)
I include the sleeping pad in this category. Kate and I will split the tent weight so individually our packs will be a little lighter than the total here.
In addition to a warm jacket and rain jacket I’m planning one extra set of hiking clothes, thermal bottoms, and a silkweight shirt/lightweight shorts to sleep in. I’m choosing not to bring any rain pants.
SILK WEIGHT LS TOP
HIKING SHORTS (2nd)
HIKING SHIRT (2nd)
COLUMBIA AIRGILL SOLAR ZERO
HIKING SOCKS (2nd)
Some people choose to go stove-less for the Pacific Crest Trail thru hike, I plan to at least start with a stove and see how it goes. The whole system is still pretty light.
DIRTY WATER RESERVOIR
COOK GEAR STUFF SACK
ZPACKS CUBEN FIBER
I use my iPhone for most everything (pictures/video, GPS, podcasts/music, Instagram/Facebook etc.) so I’m bringing my phone battery case as well as a battery brick. The two port charger and dual USB cables will allow charging of phone/case and brick at the same time in town.
