How to Buy Travel Insurance

I used to think of travel insurance as something you buy when you think there might be a risk of missing your vacation.  Or say, you’re planning to hit the Caribbean during hurricane season. In the past I’ve always declined it when offered. I’ll never get sick enough to miss vacation!

I now know that travel insurance covers a whole lot more than protecting against a missed vacation. Get sick ON vacation? Covered. Bags lost in transit? Covered. Valuables stolen from your hostel? Covered. Helicopter evac from 18k feet? COVERED.  It’s the one thing you pay for and hope to never actually need, but trust me, you do not want to be stranded on a remote mountain side with a broken leg and having to pay your own way out of there.

Travel insurance can be custom tailed to suit your trip and your lifestyle and the total cost really depends on you.  It can be had for as little as a couple of dollars a day.  We purchased our first 6 month worldwide policy for $670 for BOTH of us. That’s $1.86 a day per person. If you’re into extreme sports, or carry really expensive photography equipment, it’s going to cost a little more, but the protection and piece of mind are well worth it.

There are a multitude of companies that offer travel insurance and as with most things some are better than others. We recommend you shop around for what best suits you. Travel insurance companies are just the same as regular insurance companies in that getting a claim paid can be work sometimes.  It’s important to know exactly what your travel insurance covers as well as exactly what it does not cover.

There are however some key points that any coverage you buy should have:

  • Coverage in the countries you are visiting (duh)
  • Injury/Sickness
  • Evacuation (including to home country)
  • Flight/Hotel Cancelations
  • Electronic equipment

So who is the best? In our opinion, it’s WorldNomads.  They are the best in the business.
